1 - Persian King (7) Andre Fabre/Pierre-Charles Boudot

Boasts a superb strike rate and made it 3 wins for the year when seeing off Pinatubo in the Prix du Moulin (1m) here last month. One of the more classy ones but very hard to see him staying this trip.

2 - Royal Julius (8) J. Reynier/Shane Foley

Some good runs this year without adding to his November Bahrain success. Huge surprise if he's involved.

3 - Way To Paris (6) Andrea Marcialis/Ioritz Mendizabal

Has had a good year, landing his first Group 1 in the Prix de Saint-Cloud in June. Poor run in the Prix Foy over C&D 3 weeks ago though and hard to fancy in this.

Very smart 3-y-o, his wins including the Grand Prix de Paris over C&D, while he was fourth in this. 2020 has been a letdown and Ryan Moore jumps ship but not the biggest surprise to see a revival.

5 - Sovereign (10) Aidan O'Brien/Mickael Barzalona (Non-runner)

Caused a surprise when making all in the 2019 Irish Derby. Not so good this year, including when fancied in the Irish St Leger last time, but will handle conditions in the firing line.

6 - Stradivarius (14) John Gosden/Olivier Peslier

Has led all before him in the British staying division since 2018 and ran a good race in the Prix Foy over C&D last month. Stronger pace/softer ground sure to suit and he's one of the key players.

7 - Sottsass (4) Jean-Claude Rouget/Cristian Demuro

One of the top 3-y-os in 2019, third in this after winning the Prix Niel over C&D, and has held his form well this term, catching the eye in the Irish Champion 3 weeks ago. Major player back here.

8 - Enable (5) John Gosden/Frankie Dettori

Superstar mare who won this in 2017 and 2018 and was a fine second last year. Easy wins in small fields the last twice and proven under the conditions. Everything looks set fair for her to make history.

9 - Deirdre (12) Mitsuru Hashida/Jamie Spencer

Smart Japanese mare who landed the Nassau at Goodwood in 2019. Plenty of creditable runs since but unlikely to be winning this.

10 - Gold Trip (9) Fabrice Chappet/Stephane Pasquier

Smart colt who won Lyon Group 2 over 11f in June and was much improved behind fellow 3-y-os Mogul and In Swoop in the Grand Prix de Paris over C&D for all he didn't convince with his stamina.

11 - Chachnak (13) Fabrice Vermeulen/Tony Piccone

Took another stride forward when winning the Group 3 Prix du Prince d'Orange over 10f here last month, just holding on. Big step up in trip/class both likely to find him out here.

Took a huge step forward when winning the German Derby in July and shaped really well when splitting Mogul and Gold Trip in the Grand Prix de Paris over C&D. Sterner test will suit and could figure.

14 - Serpentine (15) Aidan O'Brien/Christophe Soumillon (Non-runner)

Made all under a cracking ride in the Derby but hung right and not so good when behind 3 of these rivals in the Grand Prix de Paris over C&D 3 weeks ago. Betting on football games online. Supplemented and has Soumillon booked.

Timeform Analyst's Verdict

Last year's third SOTTSASS is set for a big run and is selected at the prices. He was closing in on Enable all the time 12 months ago, this scenario looking right up his street, and he emerged with credit in the Irish Champion. The mighty Enable, seeking a historic third win in this, looks sure to go well, as does stablemate Stradivarius, who is bound to relish what could be an attritional Arc.

Key stats

  • Distance winner, ten winners in last ten runnings
  • Aged three or four, 10/10 (six were three-year-olds)
  • Group 1 winner, 9/10
  • Adjusted RPR of at least 131, 9/10
  • Top-three finish last time out, 8/10
  • Drawn in single figures, 7/10
  • Won at least half their starts that season, 6/10
  • Won a Group race last time out within last two months, 6/10

Other factors

  • Solemia (2012) and Treve (2014) scored as four-year-olds, but the last French-trained older horse to win before that was Urban Sea in 1993.
  • Solemia is the only one of the last ten winners not to have previously landed a Group 1, but she had won a Group 2 and had been placed at Group 1 level on her latest start.
  • In the last 40 years there have been just two winners aged older than four (Tony Bin in 1988 and Marienbard in 2002 were five-year-olds).
  • Andre Fabre has landed the Arc on seven occasions, six times with three-year-olds.
  • Winners of the Arc trials fared as follows: Niel 34004030; Foy 07229064; Vermeille 799140.
  • Winners of the Derby finished 117719; Irish Derby 600790; Irish Champion 1041.
  • Seven of the last ten winners were fillies – the other three all won the Derby.

Key trials

The Arc attracts horses from all the top mile-and-a-half races around the world. This means the Derby and Oaks at Epsom and the King George VI Stakes at Ascot are good markers in the UK, while the Irish Derby and Irish Oaks are also used as trials. It's not unusual to see Japanese horses who have contested the Japan Cup, despite there never having been a Japanese winner of the Arc. In France, the main trials are the Prix Niel, the Prix Foy and the Prix Vermeille.

What happened last year?

Enable claimed her second Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in thrilling circumstances. Under Frankie Dettori, the wondermare hit the front with a furlong and a half to go and started to assert her authority. The race looked in the bag but the fast-finishing Sea Of Class gave Enable fans plenty to worry about as she closed at an alarming rate of knots. Enable's winning distance was a short neck despite her having held a three-length lead at the half-furlong marker.

Arc Paris Horse Racing Handicapping

Enable bids to land an unprecedented third Arc and is an even-money favourite to do so. The season has developed in an interesting way with regard to Arc contenders but one thing that has remained constant is the star mare's form. Crystal Ocean looked a real challenger in the King George but Enable claimed his scalp, Magical looked to pose a threat in the Yorkshire Oaks but she made light work of her as well – she has brushed aside all-comers in typical gutsy manner. She will take all the beating in Paris, but the improving Japan can't be disregarded given he has Group 1 course form and beat Crystal Ocean at York, and the locals look well represented with Prix du Jockey Club winner Sottsass, but it is hard to envisage anything getting in front of the extraordinary Enable.
